The assuming of the title opens a year which will witness around 500 events aimed at fostering reading, developing reading culture and improving the accessibility of books, as well as presenting literary genres and world literatures. The majority of the events in the programme, designed by the Municipality of Ljubljana and supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia and the Slovenian Book Agency, will be realised by non-governmental organisations and public institutions dealing with culture, science and research, all selected by expert committees in a public tender. Part of the programme is being developed together with other Slovene cities and embassies in Ljubljana.
